As a young student, Rita was obsessed with the pursuit of knowledge. They were sure there were certain truths that hadn't been uncovered, and they were out to find and reveal the secrets of the world around them and beyond. They studied under all the greatest professors, but it still didn't satiate their thirst for knowledge. Of course, as these things go, their hubris and lack of caution could only end one way - they went too far, found things that were never meant to be taken out of the shadows, and it tried to consume them. No one is quite sure what Rita encountered that day, but it took their eyesight and left them with a nasty curse. Rita's vigourous search for something greater turned into a quest for something - anything - to keep the curse at bay and prevent it from infecting the rest of their body. They managed to find a spell to keep it bound to just their leg, thanks to the help of certain rare crystals imbued with protective powers. Unfortunately, nothing Rita found was able to completely rid them of the infection, and their leg will forever belong to some other entity. It often has a mind of its own, and before this incident their foot was padded rather than cloven. They now dedicate their life to assisting others in their own academic pursuits, using their magic to enable themself to read, and warning of the dangers of recklessly chasing that which is better left to rest (or rot).
