An animal companion is not one that Yuna is entirely familiar with. The term 'pet' is a foreign one to her. Animals are for labor or food as far as she was raised. There are the beasts of burden in the fields, donkeys and horses who pull the carts or plows through the field to get it ready for planting in the differing seasons. Then there are the food stock such as cows, chickens, ducks, and fish which, as expected, are raised to be eaten and of which she doesn't know. They are just animals to her, she cares for then and wants them to be well and hale and whole, but she doesn't have a bond with them. The closest she has to a 'companion' I guess you could say are the wildbirds who feast upon the seeds in her garden that she throws out every morning. She's done so for years and thus has earned their trust enough for them to come to her when she appears outside and even out of her hand. She wouldn't say she has a strong bond with any of them. Of course she does feel sad when she notices regular birds not appearing anymore, or when they come to her injured or sick, but she doesn't experience what you would call a 'bond' with them. It's a bit lonely if she were to be honest, but it's just the way it is.
